What are RFID and NFC security risks?

D2 ยท Threats  ยท  CompTIA Security+ SY0-701
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) uses radio waves to identify tags (access cards, inventory, passports). NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short-range (โ‰ค4cm) RFID variant used for contactless payments and access cards.

Security risks:
๐Ÿ“ก Eavesdropping โ€” intercepting RFID/NFC communications
๐Ÿ”„ Cloning/skimming โ€” copying card data to create a duplicate
๐Ÿ“ถ Relay attack โ€” extending NFC range to fool readers (contactless payment fraud)
๐Ÿšซ Jamming โ€” blocking RFID signals
RFID skimming is a real threat to contactless credit cards and access badges. Shielded wallets (Faraday pouches) block unauthorized RFID reads. Relay attacks are used to bypass contactless payment limits by relaying NFC signals across distance. Know RFID vs. NFC distinctions for the exam.
